THE VISUAL ARTS

At Aoba-Japan International School, our Visual Arts programme is rooted in inquiry-based learning, encouraging students to explore diverse art forms, techniques, and creative processes through hands-on projects. Students engage with a wide range of media—including digital tools—while investigating themes that resonate personally and globally. Their learning is documented in a process journal, fostering both creative and critical thinking as they research art movements, analyse works, articulate intentions, and reflect on their artistic growth. In the MYP years, learning extends beyond the classroom through field trips to museums, interactions with artists, and participation in competitions, enriching their real-world understanding of art. In the IB Diploma Programme, Visual Arts and Film challenge students to expand their creative and cultural perspectives. Visual Arts students explore global practices and media while developing analytical, technical, and reflective skills, whether pursuing higher education in the arts or seeking personal enrichment. The DP Film course complements this by combining theoretical study with practical filmmaking, allowing students to build their artistic voice and communicate through cinematic language. Both courses are available at higher and standard levels, supporting a range of learner pathways and aspirations.
